Why is stiffness so important?
A good gearbox is a STIFF gearbox!
Stiffness reduces the heat of the motor, avoids bugs in the servo controller, increases your application dynamics, improves precision. Stiffness is performance!
- Stiffness reduces lost motion : a stiff gearbox allows a more precise positioning, as your system's theoretical position will be closer to the real position of the gearbox output shaft. It's even more obvious when a radial load is applied on the output shaft. This gives very clear results in printing, laser-cutting or satellite communication systems
- Stiffness reduces the heat of your motor : a stiff gearbox will reduce the oscillations in your control loops. For instance, delta robots require very stiff gearboxes.
- Stiffness enables faster acceleration, as motor power will be used more efficiently if oscillations are reduced. The impact on the end-user product is very noticeable in dynamic applications, where inertia and acceleration are high. If you build fibre laser-cutting machines, you'll notice the difference after just a few seconds : a stiff gearbox will give you a clean cut.
- Stiffness eases your machine setup if your axis is dynamic, as motor tuning is faster.
Reckon Ultimate series is the answer to applications requiring high stiffness. Being stiff and precise, it offers one of the lowest lost motions on the market.
