ISO 9409-1 flange vs. male shaft

1. For stiffness

In most industrial machines, a flange connection is:

  • more rigid,

  • more stable,

  • and less sensitive to micro-movements than a male-shaft + coupling + clamping interface.

2. For safety

In the presence of vibrations, a male shaft clamped with a hub can experience:

  • microscopic slippage,

  • progressive misalignment,

  • fretting,

  • or gradual loosening (if the assembly is not perfectly executed).

An ISO flange, on the other hand, eliminates this failure mode because:

  • it provides rigid axial and radial support,

  • the connection is geometrically constrained,

  • there is no interface likely to slip,

  • and the load is distributed across several screws secured with thread-locker.

3. For convenience

The ISO 9409-1 flange is also very convenient for mounting your AGV / AMR wheel!
